It was another disappointing day for Spurs' Martin Jol, as Arsene Wenger's table toppers, Arsenal, overcame a 1 goal deficit to stake their place at the head of the leaderboard.
An exciting North London derby saw a Adebayor double and a Fabregas 25 yarder, as Tottenham sunk after a very clever Gareth Bale free kick early on. Arsenal pressed Tottenham for the whole first half following the goal with Diaby hitting the cross bar after some expert play from the impressive Aleksander Hleb. The first half gave Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson a real workout as he thwarted Adebayor on two separate occasions and was kept busy throughout the half which included a great save to keep Robin Van Persie at bay.
Tottenham, although under the cosh, did have opportunity to cement the lead as Berbatov raced forward, a perfectly timed Kolo Toure challenge was required to keep Arsenal in it.
The second half saw Arsenal come out as they had ended the first half with heavy pressure on the home team. The Spurs defence took 20 minutes to cave in as an Adebayor header put finish to a superb Fabregas free kick, conceded by Malbranque in a similar position to where Bale scored from. Spurs would have been kicking themselves as earlier Berbatov missed the chance of the season, choosing to take Toure on, rather than shoot at an open goal after taking the ball around a stranded Almunia.
Tottenham recovered well to the goal and were almost rewarded for their efforts as a box scramble resulted in Berbatov being denied off the line by Gael Clichy. The tempo of the game picked up and an exciting end ensued as Fabregas fired with sharpshooter precision from outside the box taking Arsenal 2 -1 up in the last ten minutes of standard time.
Tottenham will rue missed chances as £16 million pound man, Darren Bent, broke free and miss hit the ball when one on one with the Arsenal keeper. However the match was well and truly wrapped up with some absolute magic as Adebayor flicked the ball up in the air with his back to goal and volleyed into the top corner of the Spurs net.
Vintage performances from Fabregas, Clichy and Sagna kept Arsenal dangerous down the flanks and creative from the centre and although Spurs fans will be disappointed they cannot fault the entertainment value this fiery North London derby provided.
